Bouteflika Transferred to Switzerland for ‘Medical Tests’

Rabat - Algeria's ailing President Abdelaziz Bouteflika has been transferred on Sunday, April 24, to Switzerland for medical tests.

Without providing more details, a statement from the president's office says the president has been transferred to Switzerland on Sunday for a private visit and "periodic medical tests."

Bouteflika, 79, suffered a stroke in 2013 that has impeded his mobility and speech. The accident occurred after he had undergone two days of medical tests at a cardiology unit in France.

Since then, the Algerian president rarely makes televised appearances and is most of the times seen in a wheelchair.

The hospitalization of the Algerian president comes just days after the controversy caused by a photo made public by French Prime Minister Manuel Valls on his Twitter account on April 10.

In the photo, the Prime Minister looks with a smile on his face, the Algerian President appears sad, looking lost with his mouth uncontrollably open.

Bouteflika took office in 1999 and has been re-elected three times. His election for a third term was made possible after the Algerian government amended the constitution to allow the siting President to run for more presidential terms.
