Rabat - The working class in Rabat celebrated on Sunday the Labor Day (May 1) by calling for preserving benefits and meeting legitimate demands.
The trade unions held several meetings before staging the traditional marches in the capital's main avenues during which the activists chanted slogans calling for the institutionalization of the social dialogue, the preservation of benefits, increasing salaries, the generalization of social welfare and trade unions' unity.
In its meeting, deputy secretary general of the "Union nationale du travail au Maroc (UNTM)" Abdessamad Lamrini underlined the importance of reinforcing social solidarity, stressing the role of citizen enterprises in reducing social differences and their positive impact on economic development and social peace.
For her part, Khadija Zoumi from the "Union générale des travailleurs du Maroc (UGTM)" deplored the failure of the social dialogue and reaffirmed the trade union's attachment to legitimate demands by the working class.
Secretary general of the "Confédération générale du travail (FDT)" Abdelali Gmira criticized the results of the social dialogue and insisted on the need to ameliorate incomes and establish a trade union front to face the increase of prices and the reform of the pension system.
Secretary general of the "Organisation démocratique du travail (ODT)" Omar Lotfi said that the government has blocked all mechanisms related to the social dialogue and did not honor its commitments of April 26, 2011.
