Rabat - The new mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said on Wednesday that Donald J. Trump is “playing into the hands of extremists” and is “ignorant about Islam.”
The first Muslim mayor of a Western capital said that his election, despite a divisive campaign propagated by his Conservative opponent, Zac Goldsmith, is a lesson to Trump that Islam is “perfectly compatible with Western values.”
The Muslim mayor from the Labor Party said: “Daesh, ISIS, all those guys, hate the fact that I am mayor of London. Why? Because it contradicts what they say, which is that Western liberal values are incompatible with Islam.”
Khan called on Americans to consider the example of Londoners who “chose unity over division, and a rejection of the politics of fear.”
The son of a Pakistani bus driver didn’t want to be a spokesman for Muslims or Islam, but he intended to represent all groups in London.
Speaking Wednesday in London, he said that American voters faced a decision "of hope over fear, unity over division."
"A choice of somebody who is trying to divide, not just your communities in America but who is trying to divide America from the rest of the world. And I think that, you know, that's not the America that I know and love."
The Mayor of London hopes that Trump "is not the guy that wins," encouraging Hillary Clinton, the probable Democratic candidate for president, to be inspired by his approach of “unity over division.”
Trump spoke of making an “exception” to his proposed temporary ban on Muslims entering the United States so that Khan could visit, but Khan quickly shot back, rejecting this suggestion.
"I'm not exceptional," Khan was quoted by CNN as saying.
"So for Donald Trump to say, 'Oh, but Mayor Khan can be allowed, but not the rest,’ is ridiculous," the Mayor said.
