New York - At least 50 people were killed in Orlando shooting, Orlando police said Sunday morning.
The number of people killed in the mass shooting that occurred in Orlando, Florida in the early hours of Sunday has increased to at least 50 people.
The attack occurred between 2 and 5 am local time, when Omar Saddiqui Mateen, a US-born citizen, identified as the suspect, opened fire inside Pulse nightclub, a gay nightclub in Orlando, before entering the premises of the nightclub and taking hostages.
In addition to the dead, there are at least 53 injured.
The incident is being described as the deadliest mass shooting in the history of the United States.
Orlando authorities said earlier this morning they were investigating whether Omar Saddiqui Mateen, 29, who is of Afghan descent, has any ties to Islamic terrorism.
Police said the shooter was well prepared and heavily armed.
"It's appears he was organized and well-prepared," Orlando Police Chief John Mina said, adding that the shooter had an assault-type weapon, a handgun and "some type of (other) device on him."
