Rabat - Today, three terrorist cells were dismantled in three major cities in Morocco. Fes, Casablanca and Ouled Taima.
Their purpose? To plan attacks on Moroccan soil.
Hostage-taking situations, attacks against security personnel and a female suicide bomber were all part of elaborate plans to ‘terrorize’ the kingdom reveals Le360.
The details
Among the three interconnected ISIS-linked terrorist cells dismantled on Thursday was a woman who volunteered for a suicide attack at one of the “hot sites” using a belt, an explosive belt.
According to information obtained by Le360, she had links with jihadists in Libya.
All cell members pledged allegiance to ISIS and had an apparent hatred for Morocco, its kingdom and its symbols. They were preparing to acquire weapons according to some information that is still being investigated.
The weapons and plans
But what we do know are some of the objectives and the weapons that could have been used to fulfil planned attacks.
Equipped with remote-controlled explosive charges attacks were planned on the security headquarters in the kingdom, more details are not known.
There were also plans to take tourists hostage to force authorities to release jihadist inmates in prisons in Morocco or ask for ransoms.
The news of this dismantling network of cells comes days after an ISIS claimed attack on a bus in Tunis, killing 12 people, Tunisia, soon closed its borders with Libya afterwards.
A week ago a five suicide attacks in Nigeria and Cameroon claimed the lives of 17 people. A hotel siege in Bamako, Mali, killed 22 people. And, of course, the week before attacks in Paris and Beirut –which were one day apart – killed about 173 people in total injuring more than 550.
Over the course of the past week, Moroccan security and intelligence services efforts have received praise from several countries, including France, Belgium and Spain.
Morocco has faced terrorist attacks in the past, the last of which happened in Marrakech.
