Rabat - Saudi Arabia is moving forward to execute over 55 men convicted of terrorism in one single day. The move has been slammed by NGOs and mocked by Russian media.
A report by Saudi daily Okaz newspaper said at least 55 people are awaiting execution for "crimes of terrorism”, in what appears to be a warning to would-be jihadists at a time of militant attacks on the kingdom.
The prisoners were found guilty of involvement in al-Qaeda linked terror attacks, which killed more than 100 civilians and 71 security personnel, Okaz reported.
The Saudi publication, however, did not specify when the executions will take place.
Amnesty International has expressed alarm at Saudi Arabia’s mass execution plan. Given the spike in executions this year, Saudi Arabian authorities have no option but to take the reports very seriously, said the human rights group.
Amnesty noted that executing dozens of people “in a single day would mark a dizzying descent to yet another outrageous low for Saudi Arabia.”
Statistics say over 151 people were executed in Saudi Arabia so far this year, the highest rate since 1995.
Russian media outlets, on the other hand, have mocked Saudi Arabia’s move, with Russia Today labeling it as “Black Friday Saudi-style.”
