Tangier’s ‘Revolt of Candles’ Against Amendis Electricity Bills

Rabat - Thousands of people in Tangier took to the streets Saturday to protest against electricity bills, which they believe are too high.

Thousands of people took part in demonstrations on October 24 in the main streets of Tangier, holding candles to protest against Amendis, the city’s electricity service company. The company’s electricity bills are deemed high, according to media sources.

The “Revolt of Candles" as it is nicknamed in Tangier, calls on residents to cut electricity from 20h to 22h every night and use candlelight instead.

The protests were initially dispersed by security forces at the main gathering point, Place des Nations, according to Hespress

Clashes between protesters and security forces lasted nearly half an hour, prompting security forces to withdraw, according to the same source.

Protesters stormed the streets of Tangiers, and those who did not take to the street participated by turning off lights and using candles.

Before this campaign, protesters went to the streets on October 17 with candles in hand to protest against Amendis’s electricity bills and were dispersed by security forces.

The protest was held after a group of young people launched a campaign on Facebook calling on all people in Tangier to meet in Place des Nations.
