HACA Refuses Benkirane's Request to Take Action against 2M TV's Jennifer Lopez Concert

Rabat - Morocco’s Head of Government, Abdelilah Benkirane, expressed his complete disapproval of the decision made by the Maroc Culture Association to invite Jennifer Lopez to the 14th Mawazine Festival.

During a special live broadcast on Moroccan TV channel Medi1 TV on Thursday, a journalist asked Benkirane his thoughts regarding the decision of Morocco’s High Authority for Audio-visual Communication, known by its French acronym HACA, to refuse his request to take legal action against Moroccan TV channel 2M for broadcasting Jennifer Lopez’s concert live.

The head of the coalition government said it was a “disgrace” to invite the American star and broadcast her concert live on public television.

JLo’s performance at the opening ceremony of the 14th Mawazine Festival, last May 29, stirred an uproar as the American star appeared scantily clad on stage.

Her performance was deemed as an “insult” to Morocco’s traditions and religious values by a large number of Moroccans, who took to social media to vent their anger.

Morocco’s Prime Minister was quick to react to the controversy caused by the performance, pointing out that the New Yorker artist’s concert contained “sexually suggestive” scenes.

In June, the head of the government sent a letter to the HACA, urging it to take legal action against 2M.

Benkirane considered the broadcast of the concert “a blatant violation of the Moroccan Constitution, of audiovisual legislation, and legal provisions related to the company SOREAD 2M.”
