New York - The United States reiterated on Wednesday their commitment to intensifying the fight against the so-called “Islamic State” group (ISIS) in Iraq and Syria, said the US Department of Defense.
During a meeting at NATO Headquarters in Brussels with the Canadian Minister of National Defence Harjit Sajjan, the US Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter reiterated his country’s commitment to intensifying its campaign against the extremist group, according to a statement by Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook.
During the meeting, which was dominated by the issue of the fight against ISIS, the US official thanked Canada especially for the country’s pledge to redouble its intelligence efforts and expand its humanitarian aid and contributions to development, particularly in Iraq. Cook also said that the two officials discussed Canada's future contribution to air strikes against ISIS, which will take place particularly through aerial surveillance.
Carter and Sajjan discussed the situation in Afghanistan, welcoming the progress made by the Afghan National Security Forces. They also, however, acknowledged that these forces will need additional support in the near future.
The two ministers stressed the importance of "the long-standing military cooperation" between Canada and the United States, saying that they are prepared to maintain "close contact" to strengthen these relations.
